The workshop will cover the materials, processing and markets for woodfibre/plastic composites (WPC's). Included in the discussion of
materials are the plastics used, the fillers, and the additives. The processing discussion covers single-screw and twin-screw extrusion, and
injection molding. The market discussion includes the construction industry with examples of decking, fencing and siding.
Outline of workshop by topics:
- introduction and concepts
- wood fiber - type, size, drying, other cellulosic fibres
- plastic - PE, PVC, PP, future
- markets - construction
- decking
- fencing
- siding
- other
- processing - extrusion
- twin-screw
- single-screw
- concentrate
- profile
- processing - injection molding
- additives
- compatibilizers
- UV stabilizers
- Fungicides
- Foaming agents
- Lubricants
- Thermal stabilizers
- testing
- building code approval - U.S. and Canada
- future markets
- future materials - 2nd generation WPC's
Instructor: Frank W. Maine is a consultant as well as Chief Technology Officer of PSA Composites LLC. Dr. Maine has spent over 40 years
in the plastics industry. Of these, 6 years were spent in charge of research and development at Fiberglas Canada where he was involved in
the commercializing of three composite technologies: glass-fiber reinforced thermoplastics, mica-reinforced thermoplastics and pultrusion.
For the last 25 years, he has been a consultant in the plastics industry helping primarily small and medium-sized enterprises develop new
plastics and composites products and processes. Included in this work is the development of oriented polymers and woodfibre/plastic composites.
He has been involved in the commercialization of the second-generation WPC technology.
Instructor: Michael Burgoyne is a consultant with over 40 years experience in the plastics and rubber industries. Mr. Burgoyne has extensive
experience in injection moulding from his work at Rubbermaid, Moldmasters, and Bayer. His work at Urylon gave him expertise in polyurethanes
and at National Rubber, rubber processing including recycling. He has been involved in composite technologies in the aircraft industry, and other
specialty market sectors. His work has involved both product and process development. Much of his present work involves consulting in
woodfibre/plastic composites especially with the injection moulding processing of WPC's. Michael is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals
and Mining, a Senior Member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, and a member of the American Chemical Society.
